Frequently Asked Questions

Why are drainage districts important?

Drainage Districts provide an outlet for drainage tile. This outlet is essential for adequate soil conditions and high yields. Much of Iowa would be unfarmable without drainage. Most drainage districts in Iowa were constructed over 100 years ago with few improvements since then. A 1983 Iowa State University Study found that 95% of drainage district tiles were undersized- not meeting the needs of modern agriculture.

What is the process to improve a drainage district?

To improve or repair a drainage district tile or open ditch, a landowner must file a petition with the County Auditor's Office. An engineer will survey and study the existing district. They will then make a report to recommend a solution, and plans to achieve this. All landowners within the district are invited to a public hearing to discuss the report and plans.

Who pays for drainage district repairs and improvements?

Costs are assessed to the landowners within the district based on the benefit classification. The board of supervisors, acting as trustees, levies assessments to cover engineering, construction, and administration under Iowa Code Chapter 468.
